About the J.B. Moore Society

The John Bassett Moore Society of International Law (J.B. Moore Society) is dedicated to furthering the study of international law at the University of Virginia, providing a forum for law students with an interest in international affairs to meet and discuss issues in international law, and sponsoring social and academic events that further these goals.

Founded in 1951, the J.B. Moore Society is the oldest organization of its kind in North America. The J.B. Moore Society's primary objective is to contribute to the development of international law by fostering interest and understanding in the field. To promote that goal, the Society sponsors speaker programs, conferences, and social activities.

The J.B. Moore Society is named in honor of John Bassett Moore, an 1880 graduate of the University of Virginia and renowned international law scholar and practitioner.  More information about John Bassett Moore’s contributions to the field of international law can be found on the UVA Law Library’s Special Collections website.

Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University.
